The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Dimitris Kairides, met with his Cypriot counterpart, Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannouon the sidelines of the Delphi International Economic Forum.
Recently, there has been increased concern about immigration pressure from Lebanon, a country experiencing a multi-layered crisis and hosting more than two million Syrian refugees. The meeting took place in the context of the very close cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in the immigration field and aimed to exchange views and coordinate the action of the two Governments to deal with the situation.
More specifically, the possibility of re-examining parts of the Syrian territory as a safe country after 13 years since the civil war broke out in Syria was investigated. Mr. Kairides expressed Greece’s undivided support for Cyprus and emphasized that the Greek Government will exhaust all possibilities for the comprehensive European support of the Republic of Cyprus.
The two ministers welcomed the approval of the Migration and Asylum Pact by the European Parliament and agreed to work closely, both at the political and official level, for its better adoption, with the exchange of know-how and with the joint meetings of the respective working groups for its implementation.
Greece and Cyprus are located at the southeastern tip of Europe and border a destabilized Middle East, at risk of widespread conflagration. The stabilization of Lebanon, with the active support of the EU, is of vital importance for peace in the region as well as the arrest of migratory pressures from there, the Ministry of Migration and Asylum states in a related announcement.
