Temperatures in Greece dropped sharply over the weekend, and the expected heavy snowfall led to a decision to close schools in some areas, including Athens.
Schools in the capital and other affected areas will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday, as heavy snowfall is expected earlier in the week, forecasters warned.
Popular tourist destinations, such as Crete, Mykonos and Naxos, have already reported snowfall, which is unusual for these latitudes. Colder weather and sub-zero temperatures are relatively common in northern Greece, but in the south, where snow is rare, this has led to traffic problems, DPA reported.
Many homes in southern Greece are unprepared for such cold weather, and local authorities have opened heated public buildings for the homeless and those whose homes are not warm enough.
