A few weeks after the storm Daniel ravaged the country, Greece is now again hit by a new storm – this time named Elias.
The emergency services are on high alert on Wednesday, when the storm is expected to move on to the last and “most dangerous” phase – central, east and south of the country.
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has therefore issued a warning to Danes staying in Greece.
– The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, thunder and hail in the affected areas. Exercise caution and always follow the local authorities’ instructions, the ministry writes in one update.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Norway has not yet released corresponding information on its website on Wednesday morning travel information.
The Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported on Tuesday evening about eleven areas on alert, and the emergency authorities send ongoing so-called 112 messages about particularly affected areas.
Over the next two days, the region of Attica and the capital Athens are expected to be particularly affected. Storms are also expected on several of the Greek holiday islands.
The concern is particularly great in Thessaly and the areas that were flooded when storm Daniel hit the country, writes Kathimerinias the ground’s ability to absorb rainwater is described as extremely limited.
Greece was hit by storm Daniel on 5 September. The rainfall amounts were record high, and in just one day between 600 and 800 millimeters of rain fell. The flood is described as the worst in Greece ever. At least 15 people lost their lives.
