In Greece, thousands said goodbye to world-famous Greek musician and political activist Mikis Theodorakis, whose works made Greek culture famous to world audiences in the second half of the 20th century, Reuters reported.
Theodorakis, whose music for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek helped create the carefree image of Greece in millions of viewers around the world, died on September 2 at the age of 96. For Greeks, it has become a symbol of the history of their class struggles and resistance over the past fifty years, the agency said. Many officials and ordinary Greeks gathered at the farewell ceremony, which took place on Wednesday in the main metropolitan cathedral in Athens, reminds BTA.
“He will always be with us, rooted in our collective memory,” Greek President Katerina Sakelaropoulou said in a speech at the cathedral, where Theodorakis’ body was laid to rest on Monday for public worship.
Many officials and ordinary Greeks gathered at the farewell ceremony on Wednesday in Athens’ main metropolitan cathedral. Today he will be buried on the island of Crete, the BNT website writes.
