Greece and Russia will sign a memorandum on the construction of a gas pipeline – 2024-09-05 17:08:12

/ world today news/ The visit of the government delegation of Greece to Moscow opens the way for the construction of a gas pipeline for the supply of Russian gas through Greece to Europe, and a memorandum will be signed soon, the Minister of Energy of Greece Panagiotis Lafazanis said in an interview for Sputnik.

“A concrete memorandum of cooperation is expected to be signed in the near future, very quickly.” This will be a big event in Greek-Russian relations, but also for our region of Europe,” said Lafazanis, who is part of the delegation led by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The visit of the government delegation and especially the meeting between Tsipras and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin opens the way for the laying of a gas pipeline through Greek territory, which will start from the Greek-Turkish border and pass along the borders with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the direction of Central Europe. This gas pipeline has a huge energy significance for the whole of Europe and will represent an extremely large project for cooperation in our region, for energy supplies and energy security of Europe, the minister said.

European companies may participate in the implementation of the Turkish Stream project. This gas pipeline will be built and financed by private companies, it will be a private project managed by a group of companies that will finance it. In all likelihood, these will be Russian, Greek companies, the Greek state and European companies,” the minister said. He noted that “Turkish Stream” is one of the largest and most ambitious projects being prepared in Europe and pointed out that its implementation is very beneficial for Greece, as it will receive discounts for gas and receive income from transit.
