Great weather and dream conditions in the mountains

Over southern parts of Scandinavia, a high-pressure ridge has formed that will not only provide good weather:

– It seems that large parts of southern Norway will have great weather in the next few days, says state meteorologist Martin Granerød at the Meteorological Institute, to Dagbladet.

– In the mountain areas, the conditions are really good, simply dream conditions now, but also in the lowlands it will be great weather, he explains.

– Is this what you might call a dream Easter?

– Yes, in many ways you can say that. The high-pressure ridge has timed well for the Easter holidays. Many will probably experience this as dream Easter weather with fantastic conditions for long ski trips and summit trips.

Will this high pressure stay the rest of Easter?

– Yes, the high-pressure ridge moves slowly south, which means fine weather in the south until Monday, the meteorologist answers, but emphasizes that there may be some local differences, and that there may be periods of more cloudy weather, especially in the morning.

Southern atmosphere

In the lowlands, temperatures can creep up to between 13 and 15 degrees during the Easter weekend, according to Granerød. To NTB, he says that Trondheim and the surrounding area can get up to 16 degrees Celsius, and that it will be the warmest city to spend Easter in.

In the mountains it will not be as hot, maybe up to 5 degrees during the day, but there the UV radiation could be as strong as in the South, the state meteorologist warns Dagbladet.

– In the areas with sun in the mountains in southern Norway, the UV index can reach 7. Then you have to be extra careful, and use both sunglasses and sunscreen, he says, and adds that a factor of 30 is recommended at such a strong UV -radiation.

– There is a Southern atmosphere with regard to UV radiation in the mountains in southern Norway, Granerød says, and continues:

– If you feel that the sun is good, you may want to take a break from the sun. Especially at this time of year here, after a long winter, the skin is not used to such strong sun. In the mountains, the snow will also lead to a lot of reflection of the sun, and the same applies near the sea.

Local differences

In the southernmost parts of Agder and Telemark, Good Friday can start with a few clouds.

– However, these will gradually disappear throughout the day, and it has already started to get better, Granerød states.

Also in Western Norway, fog can affect the morning hours both today and in the following days.

– Some of these clouds may remain, there may be local differences, and the clouds may also disappear and the weather will be fine, says the meteorologist.

– But all in all, the weather will be very nice, with high temperatures and calm wind conditions, he adds.

Low pressure in the Norwegian Sea

North of Stadt and Dovre, the high pressure will also affect the weather, according to Granerød.

– Both Trøndelag, Møre and Romsdal and Nordland get off to a good start, but there it may be more cloudy in the coming days. As it looks now, it is Nordland that gets the lowest cloud cover, he says.

North of Nordland – in Bodø, Troms and Finnmark, not as good Easter weather has been reported.

– A low pressure in the Norwegian Sea fails to keep the high pressure in the south away. This means that there will be more clouds and wind in the north, and some sleet and snow showers. The best weather in the north will be on the plateau and in southern Finnmark. Here there can be stays and periods of sunshine, says the meteorologist.

Spitsbergen is also characterized by low pressure, he continues.

– It will be cool, mostly cloudy and some snow is expected, he says.

Temperatures

Since several of the cities in Western Norway are close to the coast, the temperature will be characterized by cold sea temperatures. In Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen it will be between 11 and 13 degrees, says the meteorologist to NTB.

– North of Bodø, the temperature will be between 10 and 11 degrees. In Tromsø up to 8 degrees, says Granrød.

Spitsbergen, on the other hand, gets minus degrees, approximately 0 to minus 5

Landslides and slippery roads

Both in western and northern mountain areas there is a significant risk of landslides, warns the meteorologist – with danger level 3.

– Are there any places where it is expected that the weather can change quickly?

– In that case, it is these fog clouds that allow it to change quickly, but these will mainly lie there early in the day, and then lighten, so it gets better, Granerød answers.

He adds that good driving conditions are expected at the mountain passes, with little precipitation and little wind.

– What you can be aware of is that it can get slippery if there is snowmelt during the day, which freezes during the night, he warns.
