GRAVE/NIJMEGEN – The auction of ten unique competition shirts from NEC by Royal Visio, an expertise center for visually impaired and blind people, raised no less than 2,491 euros. In the past two weeks, interested parties were able to bid on these shirts, with the players’ names in Braille on the back. The proceeds from this campaign will entirely benefit Koninklijke Visio, which invests in sports and games equipment for visually impaired and blind students.

10 years of NEC blind stands
The shirts, which are worn by NEC Visio Education Grave were donated, were worn during the NEC match against Heracles Almelo in the Goffert Stadium on February 3. The club celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Blind Stand, which was realized at the time with the help of Royal Visio and financial support from the Visio Foundation.

Highest bids
Many bids came in via Marktplaats. The highest bids ranged from 200 to 375 euros. Philippe Sandler’s shirt, with shirt number 3, received the highest bid at 375 euros. The shirt of right back Bart van Rooij, from Escharen, was not auctioned, but will get a nice place in the Visio Onderwijs Grave building as a reminder of this great initiative by NEC. The ten highest bidders will receive a personal message from Koninklijke Visio, after which they will receive their shirts at home.

Contest
In addition, more than 100 interested parties took part in the special promotion, with which eight Braille shirts could be won. By providing motivation via the promotion page www.visio.org/watkanwel they could claim a shirt. The shirts of Sylla Sow, shirt number 19, and Lars Olden Larsen, shirt number 14, were especially popular. Koninklijke Visio received the best motivations. As one of the participants said: “I have two blind parents, I have a Braille tattoo myself and I would really like to give this shirt to my blind father as a gift. Then he can experience his first NEC match in style with me in the blind stands at NEC. That would be super cool!”

Selection of winners
The entries were judged by a committed jury, who ultimately selected the eight winning entries. The jury consisted of:

  • Ivo Westerweele, project leader NEC Social and Visio Education Grave
  • Martijn Vos, teacher of physical education
  • Mieke Janssen, group teacher and commentator Blindentribune PSV and NEC.

Jury member Mieke Jansen says: “It is very difficult to judge when you receive such great responses. Do you choose someone you want to support, someone who is an example and inspiration of #whatcando with a visual impairment, the supporter who has had a season ticket for 35 years, or the person with warm involvement and commitment to the target group? Also so many responses from children and adults who responded to win for someone else. In short, a heart-warming campaign!” The eight winners will receive a personal message from Koninklijke Visio, after which they will receive their shirts at home.

Nice detail: the shirts are beautifully packaged and sent by VISITa learn-work initiative by Gassel and Koninklijke Visio.

Royal Visio thanks everyone who contributed to the auction and the competition and of course NEC for this sporty and committed gesture. “Together we are strong for an inclusive society!”
