PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero) or INKA currently working on railroad procurement projects or rolling stock in Bangladesh and the Philippines. Before working on the project, INKA had to compete with China during the open auction process.
INKA President Director Budi Noviantoro admitted that his party was worried when he met China at the open tender process for two projects in Bangladesh and China. However, in the end INKA won the auction because it was able to provide trains at a cheaper price than China.
“This open auction has risks, especially if we meet Chinese companies. We know China’s prices are tight, it’s cheap, but INKA is still cheap,” Budi said in the BUMN Ngopi webinar, Wednesday (11/18/2020).
As a result, INKA will supply 250 units of rolling stock to Bangladesh, 6 car chains or train set-3 locomotives-15 passenger cars to the Philippines.
“We won this several times in Bangladesh, the last 250 cars were completed in October. Now the process of completing Philippine orders. Now we have completed 6 train sets, there are still 3 locomotives and 15 passenger cars,” he said.
For the Philippines, Budi admitted that it was difficult to test the train unit because the country was implementing a lockdown.
“There is a lockdown, we have difficulty sending it. Hopefully we can send it next month because the team from the Philippines has come to INKA to do a test,” Budi added.
Apart from Bangladesh and the Philippines, INKA also obtained 3 cross-border development projects on the African continent. The big project takes up to 30 years to work. The projects include the Liberia-Libya route with a length of 7,411 kilometers (Km), the Gabon-Eritrea route with a length of 4,564 km, and the Congo-Tanzania route with a length of 5,797 km.
In addition, Budi said that INKA is also exploring projects in Latin America, including in Honduras, which requires 252 locomotives with a total of 8,824 wagons. Then, Uruguay which needs 2 locomotives and 40 wagons. Finally, Ecuador needs 68 locomotives with a total of 1,020 wagons. According to him, countries on the continent are tired of Chinese products.
“They are tired of Chinese products. They came to my office to help us get into the market there. It’s a bit far, but this is a possible market for them. INKA and other BUMNs there, “said Budi.
