A great surprise in Australia, where Magda Linette reached the semi-finals of the Grand Slam, gave her a promotion to the 21st place in the WTA ranking, and thus the possibility of seeding in the next tournaments.
This directly translated into drawing rivals from lower ranking places at the start of the competition. In the tournament in Austin, the Polish woman received the first seed number and landed on the 88th racket of the world – Varvara Graczewa from Russia. Both players faced each other last year and then the Polish woman won 6:3, 6:0.
Linette’s start to the match was really impressive. The Polish woman first won the game without losing a point, then, after a fierce fight, she broke her rival and immediately led 3:0.
However, the Russian did not let go – first she won her serve, then she used Linette’s inaccuracy and immediately made up for the break. And with the course of the first set, unfortunately, Gracewa’s advantage was growing. Linette did not disappoint only on the first serve, and most of the exchanges fell prey to the 88th player of the WTA ranking.
Even service games didn’t always go as planned for Linette. The Polish woman was broken for the second time, graczewa took the lead 4:3, and later won the next two games. Lack of rhythm, three lost serves and a certain defeat after a great start – this was the first set by the 31-year-old.
Polish fans hoped that Linette would quickly be able to refer to the great performances from a few weeks ago, and the experienced tennis player surprised her rival at the beginning of the second game and won her service game. Her own passes were also better and in the following minutes we watched the games quickly won by the serving players.
Only the sixth game lasted longer, and the rivals fought for victory for a good few minutes. Gracheva had two break points, while Linette only managed to use the key pass on the fifth try and was already leading 4:2. And then, until the end of the game, she did not give up the lead and the third set had to decide about advancing to the next round of the tournament in Austin.
And this one was fantastically started by a Polish woman! After a fierce fight, she broke her rival, and then again, after an even game, she defended her application. However, this was answered by the Russian, to which the fans watching this match could already get used to. Plot twists, missed passes and incredible combat – there was more than enough of that in this match!
At the crucial moment, unfortunately, Graczewa was more accurate and consistent in her moves. The Russian led to a break and the state was 5:3, and soon after she finished the match.
In the next match in Austin, Graczewa will play with another representative of Russia. This time she will face Anna Blinkowa, who defeated Ann Li 6-4, 6-4.
