Great Britain, Japan and Italy join forces in next generation jet fighter project / Article

For Japan, the project will help counter existing Chinese military activity in the Japan and Taiwan region, and will also give Britain a greater role in the region. The project is also referred to as an engine of global economic growth.

Three countries are joining forces to design the next generation fighter jet

The goal of merging the projects is to have a modern sixth-generation front-line fighter in operation by 2035. The Global Combat Air Program will merge the British and Italian projects of the Future Air Combat System and the Japanese FX programme. Project cooperation allows countries to share costs and ensure easy cooperation with their closest partners.

This was stated by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

the purpose of the aircraft will be to increase national security, but they will also contribute to the national economy.

“We are one of the few countries in the world capable of creating technologically advanced combat aircraft. This is important because we will be able to protect our country from the new threats we are facing,” Sunak stressed. “It adds billions to our economy and supports several thousand workers across the country. Naturally, the project also enhances our international reputation. We want to work with Japan and Italy, our closest allies, to build the next generation of aircraft. We can be very proud of them.”

The project will develop various capabilities and functions for the aircraft. The jet should be able to fly faster than the speed of sound and be capable of firing supersonic weapons.

The next generation of aircraft will be designed to compete with fighters currently in use in China, Russia and even the United States.

which is a key ally of all three countries involved in the project.

British defense analyst Tim Ripley points out that it will be interesting to observe the dynamics of both project member states and allies during the development of the project.

“Japan’s involvement in the project is a new dimension because Japan has only worked with the United States so far,” Ripley explained. In the coming years we will be able to see not only how the adversaries will react, but also how the allies will react and whether they will want to join or, on the contrary, damage the development of the project”.

The United States has expressed support for Japan’s cooperation with Britain and Italy and welcomes the agreement between European countries and Japan.

The new generation of aircraft is expected to be compatible with fighters flown by other NATO allies. China and Russia currently operate fifth-generation fighters, but these countries are believed to be developing sixth-generation aircraft.

Meanwhile, Britain, Japan and Italy have yet to work out various details about project development, funding and where the aircraft will be developed.
