Farmers from 14 towns in the municipalities of Tamazunchale, Tampacán, Matlapa and San Martín Chalchicuautla are being supported by the Iberdrola company, with the aim of improving agricultural activity in the region and improving the harvests of the residents.
With the support of Horacio Hernández, a local agricultural engineer specialized in the production of the Huasteca region and a Nahuatl speaker, Iberdrola México carries out theoretical and practical training in the field on the management of more technified crops, to improve the production of citrus and other crops in the region.
“At Iberdrola México, we have a strong commitment to caring for the environment and developing communities. For this reason, we frequently carry out programs to boost the productivity of the communities near our facilities, ”said Manuel Argüelles, manager of the Tamazunchale combined cycle power plant.
Prior to the implementation of the program, in August 2020, Iberdrola México carried out a comprehensive participatory diagnosis together with the agronomist engineer, in which some practices were detected that prevent crops from reaching their maximum potential, such as some plots that are planted out of season. or the use of inappropriate chemicals, significantly affecting crops.
During the diagnosis, other areas of improvement were discovered that are shared with farmers in the region, such as the lack of fertilization of the crops and the non-rotation of the crops, which prevents the soil from recovering its nutrients. The need for replanting was also detected, due to the continuous use of old plants and the lack of pruning and weed elimination actions.
In a second stage of this program, the company began this year the delivery of supplies that will serve as a sample to carry out the practices, such as pruners, fertilizers, sprayers and 2,400 orange trees, as well as lychee plants. All this is to increase production levels in the area and improve the families’ economy.
“I like this initiative of Iberdrola México because it brings many benefits for us in this community, starting with the fruit plants that we receive, as well as the training on how we are going to take better care of them. The company and the specialist engineer have been very supportive of us during this time, ”said one of the farmers who benefited from the program.
According to analyzes carried out by specialists in different regions of the Huasteca Potosina, in low areas such as Tamazunchale, better results can be obtained from citrus crops by pruning well, removing the seedlings and eliminating weeds.
The agronomist in charge of the program emphasized that when people have training and support such as this program, the change is noticeable in the way they cultivate and this is ultimately reflected in greater benefits for the farmer in terms of yield.
Manuel Argüelles, manager of the plant, pointed out that with 13 years of presence in the Huasteca Potosina, Iberdrola México continues its work to promote the economic and social development of the State. Therefore, it seeks to improve the environment and the quality of life of the communities, through actions that benefit its inhabitants.
