At the end of 2023 Ticket to Ride (App Store-Link), in German “Zug um Zug”, released as a new edition under the banner of Marmalade Game Studio and Asmodee Entertainment. We loved the earlier version and played it almost every day, but the new edition initially had room for improvement. The developers have improved the game with a few updates and are delivering San Francisco as a digital game map for the first time in the latest update.
The new “San Francisco” game plan is subject to a charge and costs 7.99 euros when purchased individually. Anyone who opts for the “all-you-can-play ticket”, which costs 29.99 euros, can also play the new schedule. Since the map is not very large, the new game plan is also suitable for shorter rounds. In addition, the developers have integrated a rematch function that makes it possible to start another round with the same players directly from the end screen.
New are two characters and themed vehicles inspired by the 1960s. Among other things, you can drive through the city with fashion designer Summer Ashbury in the “Bay Bug” or climb into a sleek “Gazelle” with film star Felix Woods. And if you fancy the classic cable cars, you can also use the “Municipal Wings”, “Golden Ribbon” and “Hillside Heritage Cars”.
Ticket to Ride is still a lot of fun
The principle of the game is unchanged: you have to build and connect your routes using playing cards that provide routes. Since the other players also want to build their routes completely, you can get in each other’s way. Routes can only be traveled with the appropriately colored playing cards and some routes can only be passed once.
The digital version automatically adds up all the points at the end of the game. However, if you don’t complete a route, you get minus points. Bonus points are available, for example, for special bonus tokens or for the longest route. Ticket to Ride is still a lot of fun, although we liked the old version better.
Ticket to Ride costs 4.99 euros and is available for iPhone and iPad. Various game plans can be purchased via in-app purchase, although you can also buy the “world travel ticket” for 29.99 euros, which gives access to all cards. Additional characters, locomotives and train cars are available as optional in-app purchases.
