The Center of Physics will unite the physics institutes of the University of Graz and TU Graz at a common location and will be built on the University of Graz campus by 2030 in place of the preclinic. With the Graz Center of Physics, the universities will further strengthen the synergies in research, teaching and infrastructure and help Graz physics achieve even greater international visibility. The starting signal for the major construction project was given in spring 2021. Today, March 5th, the next phase was initiated with the start of demolition of the pre-hospital high-rise building.

Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2024

The demolition will take place in three steps. “Starting with the western wing along Goethestrasse, an excavator will remove the house floor by floor from top to bottom. The section of the building to the east will then be demolished,” said the University of Graz. The middle part should also be removed by the end of May and the above-ground demolition should be completed. You can find more information here. Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2024. The handover to the two universities is planned for 2030.
