A gray seal that was entangled in rope and fishing line has finally been freed after four days of swimming in Dutch waters. The animal, which was named Netty, was taken to Seal Center Pieterburen with serious injuries.
In Pieterburen they received reports several days in a row about a gray seal that was in trouble. In Wijk aan Zee, Egmond aan Zee, Huisduinen and Texel, people were too late to catch the animal. The seal kept swimming back into the sea before she could be helped.
After four days and a swim of 80 kilometers, the seal ended up on the beach at Den Helder. There, seal guards managed to catch her. She turned out to be entangled in rope and fishing line. They could be removed in Pieterburen, but had already caused serious injuries.
Netty had deep lacerations to her neck and right flipper. X-rays showed that her joints were not damaged. The seal center hopes that she will recover soon enough to be able to return to the Wadden Sea.
