A four kilometer long grass fire is raging on the island of Sotra in Norway and has now spread to several houses.
400 people have already been evacuated – but more are threatened.
– There is a risk of disaster, the fire brigade tells VG.
A four kilometer long fire is raging on the Norwegian island of Sotra.
According to the police, the grass fire had a size of about 200 square meters in the beginning, around 12.45, but has spread quickly and now covers several square kilometers.
– The fire is not at all under control, it is even more critical now and two houses have caught fire, says fire chief Ronald Drotningsvik to VG.
What caused the fire is still unclear. Residents in the Ågnotnes area on the island are now ready for evacuation.
– There is a risk of a catastrophe if we do not stop the fire, says Ronald Drotningsvik to the newspaper.
400 have been evacuated: We just ran
So far, 400 people have been evacuated and the number continues to increase.
Adrian Olsen who lives on Dalaskjenet and is one of those who have been forced to evacuate.
– We were only allowed to run, he says to VG.
Trygve Ågotnes also lives in the area and has also been forced to evacuate.
He has, like his neighbors, been evacuated to a football pitch.
– We received a text message if we had to gather here. We just drove. I took very little of my belongings with me, he tells the newspaper.
Several helicopters are fighting the fire
Six helicopters are helping with the firefighting work and another helicopter is on its way.
Approximately 2,000 customers have lost power as a result of the fire and the smoke is visible in large parts of it Bergen.
The police chief says TV2 that it will burn for a long time and that the post-extinguishing will last for several days.
