Grapperhaus: Julio Poch still gets compensation for eight years in prison

The Dutch government nevertheless pays compensation and a contribution towards the costs to the former pilot Julio Poch. Minister Grapperhaus announced this in the House of Representatives this evening.

It concerns a “daily allowance for wrongful detention” which is doubled because Poch has spent the wrongful imprisonment abroad. For every day of detention he receives 200 euros, which amounts to almost six tons.

The Dutch-Argentine Poch spent eight years in an Argentine prison, partly due to the actions of the Netherlands, before he was acquitted of participating in the death flights under the Argentine dictatorship.

Grapperhaus: “The fact that the detention was in Argentina created additional obstacles. These are tropical years. It was difficult for Mr Poch’s relatives to visit him there and to find his way in the Argentine legal system.”

Poch also receives an amount of compensation for the costs of his lawyer. It is not yet clear how much Poch will receive in total.
