Granny concerns about addicted grandson lead to Italy’s mafia branch being rolled up

The woman was deeply concerned about her grandson, who had entered the drug circuit and became addicted to cocaine. That writes the local newspaper Corriera Della Calabria. Desperate, she reported to the police of the southern city of Cosenza. She asked them to save her grandson, police boss Piero Sutera said.

Drugs and extortion

The police then started an investigation into drug trafficking in the city. They discovered the Muto clan, a gang that is not only guilty of drug trafficking, but also extortion of local entrepreneurs. For example, some suspects are said to have repeatedly forced a sports shop to pay ‘protection money’. It would be about 20,000 euros.

The Muto clan is a branch of the Ndrangheta, one of the most powerful and largest criminal organizations in the world. The mafia branch in Cosenza mainly traded in hash and cocaine and is said to have even used minors as drug dealers.

Drugs and large amounts of cash were found in multiple raids. The police also found a special hiding place in the ceiling of a bathroom in a house. There appeared a suspect, dressed in only his underwear to hide.

Ndrangheta

Last January, a mega trial started in Italy against the Ndrangetha mafia. More than 350 members are on trial. Politicians, entrepreneurs, civil servants and lawyers who have been in the pocket of the mafia for years have also been charged, as can be seen in the video below:
