SAN DIEGO – Family, friends and the community remember her as a woman full of unconditional love, who had an unwavering faith and above all her compassion to help others.
“It is scarier to catch the virus than to catch the vaccine,” said Romie Cervantes, who died on February 7 in one of the many interviews that Telemundo 20 did with him.
Those were the words of Romie Cervantes in January 2021 when she was just vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“My mother used to say we all have to get vaccinated,” explained the youngest daughter, Romie Cervantes.
Her daughter Benita was the one who took her as soon as the eligibility group for people 65 and older opened.
“She was one of the first to interview because, although she was old, she was young at heart,” added Martínez.
Her motivation was to return to the prisons where she served as a chaplain and hug her grandchildren.
“Because we older people pass on values to our children and it is important to be with them as much as we can,” Cervantes stressed in January 2021.
And throughout the pandemic she became a spokesperson for immunization.
“He said no no, we all have to get vaccinated, he went and sent him texts to all the ladies of your senior class and the little brothers from the church to get vaccinated,” added Martínez.
In an emotional ceremony today his loved ones, friends and family gave him the last goodbye after dying of a heart problem.
“It was a open heart surgery but their organs were closed and they could no longer do anything, “added the youngest daughter.
On February 7 at the age of 83, Romie Cervantes stopped breathing, she had three daughters, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
“I have a void in my heart because he is not here, but I have faith in Christ because he is not here,” Martinez said.
Cervantes was the founder of Love Bridge…. a ministry of education, which provided resources to women in prison.
“I served with her for three years in prison ministry in Chula Vista, the federal women’s prison, we share the word of God, we pray for them,” stressed Lourdes Kamoon, one of the women who participated during her support as chaplain.
And the memories it leaves behind are innumerable.
“It’s fast, fast there is no pain They take care of you later and look, they vaccinated me and nothing hurts”, exclaimed Cervantes during one of the interviews.
