Irritations have been running high between Erica and Maxime throughout the episode. Erica would like her daughter to do more tasks around the house, but Maxime has her hands full with her children. When Maxime asks her to watch the children so she can rinse some things, Erica decides that she will do it herself. “I’m not much of a babysitter. This gives you more satisfaction. There’s a beginning and an end to it. And you don’t have that with children. I’m actually a terrible grandmother.” Grandma Erica is more about rolling up her sleeves: “Yes, you know, if both have to be done and I can choose, then I say: well, let me rinse.”
Ultimately, Maxime convinces her mother to babysit for a while. She goes to the garden center with Martien and Montana. Yet there is no question of a relaxing afternoon among the geraniums. “Oh, mom is calling,” Maxime calls. When she answers her phone, she sees that her daughter Vivé is in tears. “Vivé fell down the stairs,” says Erica. Maxime is not happy: “God. Mom, are you serious?!” Martien is also not impressed by Erica’s babysitting skills: “She can’t do anything, right? She can’t babysit.” When Maxime asks Erica how she could have let this happen, she explains that it is probably because Vivé is wearing socks. “We went up the stairs together and she fell off.” She promises to pay more attention from now on.
However, Maxime does not have much confidence in it. “I knew it. Yes, it sounds very silly. That’s why I didn’t say anything this morning, but I still worry when those children are alone with my mother. She doesn’t pay attention, because she thinks: I’m going to do the weeds.” and so on. However, the viewers feel sorry for Maxime’s children. “Can’t those kids stay with that guy of hers?” someone wonders. Another viewer thinks she would be better off getting a paid babysitter.
