Before his departure on Thursday, Marcel Hug said: “The rampage in which eight people died on Tuesday made me very sad. But we athletes shouldn’t let that intimidate us, that’s exactly what terrorists want.” For the race he wanted to hide what had happened.

Hug wins with a huge lead
The 31-year-old from Thurgau managed this perfectly on Sunday morning in ideal marathon conditions. Ready, Set, Go! As if Hug wanted to drive away from the terror, he started right after the start at the Verrazano Bridge. After just five kilometers, Hug and Canadian Josh Cassidy are running their own race well ahead of the rest. The duo “plagued” each other for more than 30 kilometers. Shortly before kilometer 35, Marcel puts an end to the game. Before long he sets off on his own. After 2013 and 2016, the Swiss wheelchair pro celebrates his third victory in the Big Apple. His lead over the times – incredible 2:19 minutes!

Hug won five of the seven marathons he ran this year. He was second in both Tokyo and London. However, the New York triumph makes him particularly proud. “For us wheelchair athletes, it’s the toughest marathon in the world. The ramps to the many bridges are extremely strict. And that starts right at the start. The first mile onto the Verrazano Bridge is a single climb. That makes it difficult to get into the rhythm.”

Schär simply drives away after 15 kilometers
Manuela Schär (32) dominates the women’s race even more than Marcel Hug. Right from the start, she is always the first to pass the five-kilometer sections. While their lead over the two US aces Tatyana McFadden and Amanda McGrory is in the tenths of a second range up to 15 kilometers, Schär is suddenly more than 10 seconds ahead at the 20-kilometer mark. And she easily pulls the turbo through the 42.195 kilometers to the finish in Central Park. At the finish, Manuela has to wait 2:52 minutes for the runner-up. For them, the triumph in New York is a premiere. A year ago she finished second.

So the trip to New York is worthwhile for the wheelchair duo – also financially. Schär and Hug are each rewarded for their class with a prize money of 15,000 US dollars.
