Grandfather Arrested for Spreading Hoax Videos on WhatsApp

The police arrested a grandfather in Bekasi with the initials R (59) for spreading hoax videos accompanied by narration ‘demonstrator stabbed by police’ via WhatsApp group. Apparently, the grandfather joined in 54 WhatsApp groups.

“The suspect has more or less 54 groups on his WhatsApp,” said Dirkrimsus Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Ade Safri Simanjuntak, Saturday (12/8/2023).

So what are the contents of the WA group?

“It’s still being investigated,” said Ade Safri.

R himself admitted that he received the video “demonstrators were stabbed by officers on Jalan Daan Mogot, West Jakarta” from the WhatsApp group which he then re-shared without checking the truth first.

Grandfather R admitted that the video was only sent via one WhatsApp group. However, the police are still exploring the possibility that the suspect also sent the video to dozens of other groups.

“We are still investigating this. From the suspect’s statement, it was only transmitted to one WAG, and from the suspect’s statement, the investigation team will now test it using scientific investigation by doing analysis evidence that we get to seet traffic in-out-her,” he explained.

So Suspected and Detained

R (59) was arrested on Friday (11/8) early morning. Currently the man has now been named as a suspect and immediately detained.

“He has been named a suspect,” said Dirkrimsus Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Ade Safri Simanjuntak, Friday (11/8/2023).

R was arrested by the Metro Jaya Regional Police’s Cyber ​​Crime Sub-Directorate team at his house in Central Kaliabang, North Bekasi, Bekasi City, Friday (11/8) at 02.00 WIB earlier. The suspect R is now in police custody.

“He has been detained at Polda Metro Jaya Detention Center,” he added.

Ade Safri explained that the suspect was charged with Article 28 paragraph 2 juncto 45A paragraph 2 of Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions and/or Articles 14 and Article 15 of Law Number 1 1946 concerning Criminal Law Regulations.

“For legal threats against violations of Article 28 paragraph 2 of the ITE Law, they are punished with a maximum imprisonment of 6 years and/or a maximum fine of Rp. 1 billion. For threats of punishment for violations of Article 14 paragraph 1 of Law No. 1 of 1946, they are punished with a maximum prison sentence 10 years,” he said.

“For the threat of punishment for violating Article 14 paragraph 2 of Law No. 1 of 1946, a maximum prison sentence of 3 years is punishable. For a threat of punishment for violating Article 15 of Law No. 1 of 1946, a maximum prison sentence of 2 years is punished,” he added.
