“The scene would show a group of Rangers (according to the legend) entering Grandcamp on June 8, 1944” (©US National Archives, NARA, NAI:176887872).
“Grandcamp44” was created by two brothers, passionate about the history of Grandcamp-Maisy (Calvados), from his occupation until his release.
« Grandcamp44 » is a World War II research group.
It focuses exclusively on a specific geographic area, “including the municipalities of Grandcamp-Maisy, Géfosse-Fontenay, Cardonville, the north of Cambe, Cricqueville-en-Bessin and Saint-Pierre-du-Mont”, confides Gervin Thomas, 30 years old and his brother Geoffrey, the creators of the page.
Restore memory
The aim of this initiative is to bring together documents, photos, objects and much more, to create a “digital resource center”. An original idea that the creators explain:
The goal of this work is to freeze in time the memory of the people of the country and the soldiers who fought there, in order to then restore it to people of our generation.
An important and essential work of memory, so as not to reproduce the horrors.
Identify people
The actions of the two brothers do not end there. Gervin and Geoffrey also go into the field in order to preserve the built heritage, or at least to inventory it at best before its disappearance or destruction.
It is often these photos that trigger the words of our elders by bringing their memories, sometimes painful, to the surface. But these testimonies are important for our history and our heritage.
They want a maximum identification for each photo published.
