Grand Slam champion Osaka will not play in Indian Wells

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka withdrew from the October tournament in Indian Wells. Already after being eliminated in the third round of the US Open with the later finalist Leylah Fernandez from Canada, the 23-year-old player indicated that she would probably take another break from tennis.

For Osaka, the US Open was only the third tournament since Roland Garros in May. She withdrew due to mental problems. She also played in Cincinnati and at the Olympic tournament in Tokyo, where she was defeated in the third round by Markéta Vondroušová.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka won her first WTA title in 2018 at Indian Wells. “We look forward to seeing you next year, Naomi,” the US organizers said on Twitter at the current world number eight. The postponed California tournament will begin on October 6.
