Grand Seiko SBGJ255 Limited Edition Watch Review for the 55th Anniversary of 44GS Case

SULTEN METRO-This is the limited edition Grand Seiko SBGJ255 launching in December 2021. The SBGJ255 high beat LE was released to coincide with the 55th anniversary of the Grand Seiko 44 GS case.

Introduced in 1967, the original 44 GS case featured nice angular geometry and boasted a nice mix of beautifully polished and mirror-like Zaratsu surfaces for maximum light reflection.

The modern reinterpretation of the 44GS case we’re seeing today stays true to the original design DNA, but at the same time introduces more refinements to certain design aspects.

The case on the SBGJ255 measures 40mm in diameter, is about 14mm thick and has a very wearable lug to lug distance of around 46.5mm.

This model is that the entire case including the bracelet is made of lightweight Titanium. The case is sealed with the help of a threaded crown at 3 to provide a healthy 100 meter water resistance.

Grand Seiko’s dials are in a league of their own, and the one on the SBGJ255 looks no different. Presented in white, the dial has been brushed vertically for added visual interest.

Also, for an added pop of color, the GS logo applied to the 12, the GMT text at 6, the GMT hand and even the 24-hour scale on the outer rim have been rendered blue.

The hour markers and hands as on other Grand Seiko are sharp and superbly finished.

Grand Seiko has used luminescent material in the markers, and hands, to ensure the time can be read easily even in dimly lit situations.

Flipping the watch over reveals the mechanical powerhouse powering the watch, internal caliber 9S86.

Beating at 36000 VPH, the 9S86 is a true high-beat movement that not only results in greater timing accuracy but also means the second hand sweeps smoothly like butter with almost no stutter.
