The decision suggests that Attorney General Cyrus Vance in Manhattan in New York may have found evidence of a criminal act, either committed by Trump or someone close to Trump, writes the Washington Post.

The grand jury will meet three times a week for the next six months, according to the newspaper, which quotes two unnamed people with knowledge of the case. The jury will also review several cases that are not related to Trump, the newspaper writes.

A spokesman for Vance declined to comment to AFP.

The 74-year-old Trump has sent out a comment on the messages from American media. He rejects the investigation and describes it as “exclusively political”. Vance is a Democrat.

Trump also says the case “is a continuation of the largest witch hunt in US history.”

– It has never ended. No other president in history has had to put up with what I have had to endure, says Trump.
