Granblue Fantasy: Relink – A Gamescom Winner | Pre-order, Versions, and Gameplay

The great thing about Gamescom is that you often come into contact with games that you have not heard much about in advance, but which you remember very positively. This is Granblue Fantasy: Relink, my personal Gamescom winner

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is set in the Sky Realm, a world where islands float in the beautiful blue sky. You are the leader of a group of diverse characters who all have their own strengths and contribute to the team! Your goal is to get to Estalucia, an island beyond the sky. Of course on the way here you will encounter several enemies who want to deprive you of this journey.

Characters

During the hands-on I got to play with different characters. I started with Gran, the main male character in the game. This character is especially notable for his close combat and the leadership he takes in the team. You played against hordes of enemies where I was immediately grabbed by the speed of the game. Combos are made smoothly and this makes for a nice first gameplay experience.

After the first part I decided to play with Rackam. A little more in the background, this character can defeat enemies with their range through the weapon. It immediately gives a whole different dynamic to the game to have different characters do different things. Immediately I was thinking about a playthrough with the main character, but then also doing a run with another character. It means that you have to play completely differently. With Rackam it’s not much use to get very close to the enemies. So you have to adjust your play style with each character. Finally, I was allowed to play with Lo, I really wanted to play with a magic character because these kinds of games take advantage of all the lights and effects that magical characters often have. This did not disappoint. Hordes of enemies were defeated with magical attacks that had quite an impact.

For someone fairly new to this genre of games I must say I was amazed at how fast and smooth the game plays. The anime-like style together with the gameplay makes it a very nice combination for me and the characters immediately appealed to me to play more when the game comes out.
