The Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that designates with the name of Johnny Pacheco the Gran Teatro del Cibao located in the city of Santiago.
The bill was proposed by the deputy of the Dominican Liberation Party, Héctor Ramírez, and highlights the contributions made by Pacheco to Latin music, and also that he is a native citizen of the city of Santiago.
Among its considerations, the legislative piece highlights that Pacheco was a renowned Dominican musician, flutist, composer, arranger, director and producer; creator of the term “salsa” for the tropical music genre.
The deputy also highlights that Johnny Pacheco was the co-founder of the mythical orchestra “La Fania All Star”, where great performers such as Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades and Héctor Lavoe shone.
It also indicates that at the end of the fifties, he was part of the pianist Charlie Palmieri’s ensemble and in 1960, he formed his first orchestra called Pacheco y su Charanga.
In his prolific artistic career, Pacheco won the Lifetme Achievement Award from the Grammy Awards, and many of his productions were also recognized by the Latin Grammy Awards.
Infrastructure
The Gran Teatro Regional del Cibao was inaugurated on August 16, 1995. It is the architectural twin of the Eduardo Brito National Theater and was built by the architect Teófilo Carbonell, which was inspired by several international theaters.
The Gran Teatro del Cibao, now Gran Teatro del Cibao Johnny Pacheco, is a monumental work of four rooms, which are: Restoration Room, Divina Gómez Room, Eduardo Brito Room and Julio Alberto Hernández Room.
