– It is quite close, both here and elsewhere on the island, says Per Ola Harstad from Kristiansund to Dagbladet.
“Calima” is the name of the weather phenomenon where dry and warm air from Africa blows out into the Atlantic Ocean, write Large Norwegian encyclopedia. Sand from the Sahara is part of the package.
And it is precisely the sand that poses the biggest problem. The fine grains of sand can be harmful to health – especially for the elderly, small children and people with breathing difficulties or cardiovascular diseases, writes Canariavisen – who mentioned the case first.
Harstad confirms that the sand can be dangerous.
– It was very dense sand-haze with poor visibility yesterday – and it is at least as bad today, he says.
– I was outdoors yesterday for a shorter trip, but in the end chose to stay at home on the balcony. I have noticed a burning sensation and increased heavy breathing and am therefore staying indoors today, he adds.
He says that some walk around the streets with a mask – others without.
– Some don’t seem to care.
Harstad has been to Gran Canaria a number of times – but has rarely seen anything like it.
– I have been down here several times, but only rarely have I experienced it as closely as now, he says and emphasizes that there has almost only been good weather down there so far in 2023.
According to Kristiansunderen, it has been reported that the weather will improve somewhat on Tuesday.
