They are Grammy winners, belong to the best vocal ensembles in the world and are real jazz greats. We’re talking about the “New York Voices”. After two years, the group is coming back to the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf for the third edition of the International Vocal Jazz Camp. There, singers have the opportunity not only to get up close and personal with superstars, but also to learn from them. Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge work together with participants from all over the world for six days. But before jazz, singing and grooving resume at the Music Academy, there is another musical highlight: the New York Voices will give an opening concert on Sunday, August 20 at 8 p.m. together with the Bavarian State Youth Jazz Orchestra. And fans know: The performances of the group are tough.
This is how the International Vocal Jazz Camp came to Marktoberdorf
In 2019 the International Vocal Jazz Camp celebrated its premiere at the Marktoberdorf Music Academy. Jazz singer Anne Czichowsky recommended the New York Voices Marktoberdorf after this jazz camp had taken place twice in Slovenia in previous years. Word of the format spread like wildfire in the international choral world. A workshop with the New York Voices, in 2019 the only one offered by the renowned stars across Europe: the camp was fully booked within a few days, the waiting list was long. In 2020 the workshop had to take place online due to Corona. Last year the camp had to be postponed to 2022. “But now we’re back to normal,” says organizer Claudia Bestler from Jazzbüro Bayern.
Normality has returned to the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf
52 singers will come to the Music Academy in Marktoberdorf from August 20th to 26th. “Participants even come from the USA,” says Bestler. Work is carried out in ensemble lessons as well as in individual coaching and specially designed elective courses on the art and performance of jazz singing. The camp will open with a special concert. The New York Voices will perform on August 20th at 8pm together with a combo from the LJJBs conducted by Harald Rüschenbaum. The audience can look forward to favorite pieces by the New York Voices from their more than 30-year band history, unique arrangements of well-known pop classics and their own compositions by the exceptional artists.
