Grammy Academy wants more diversity among members

Around a week after the Oscar Academy, the Recording Academy responsible for the Grammys also invited new members, focusing on diversity. Of the more than 2,300 invited musicians and employees in the music industry, around half are female, around a third belong to underrepresented ethnic groups, announced the Recording Academy in Los Angeles today.

Invitees now have until September 15 to confirm that they will be able to vote on the next Grammy, scheduled for January 31, 2021, in Los Angeles. The Grammys are considered the most important music awards in the world. According to the Recording Academy, around a quarter of the currently around 13,000 members are female and belong to underrepresented ethnic groups.

At the beginning of July, the Oscar Academy had already announced that it would invite 819 new members – 45 percent of them female, a good third from underrepresented ethnic groups. Both associations had previously been heavily criticized for insufficient diversity.
