Graffiti criticizing Kim Jong-un appears on the streets of North Korea

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Pyongyang residents were shocked by the appearance of graffiti voicing criticism of the top leader North Korea, Kim Jong-un.

A source told Daily NK that the graffiti was found outside an apartment in Pyongyang’s Pyongchon District on December 22.

The graffiti read, “Kim Jong-un is a bastard. The people are starving to death because of you.”

According to the source, the graffiti was first discovered by a resident named Kim’s family at around 4:20 a.m. local time, while on patrol in the area.

According to protocol, the head of the local residents unit reported the appearance of the graffiti to local security officers. North Korea’s Ministry of State Security finally sent their agents to seal off the site and remove the graffiti.

This graffiti is believed to be proof that the public is fed up with the tightening of rules implemented by the government in the name of preventing the transmission of Covid-19.

Security forces are also on full alert because this critically charged graffiti appeared ahead of the Fourth Plenary Meeting of the North Korean Workers’ Party Central Committee.

The source also said that the authorities took the incident seriously because it happened at a time when North Korea’s political agenda was busy, from the anniversary of Kim Jong-il’s death to the birthday of Kim Jong-il’s mother.

North Korea’s Ministry of State Security immediately mobilized all efforts to find the perpetrators of this graffiti drawing.

They are even reported to have carried out a written analysis of workers at local factories and students around the site since December 23.

So far, North Korea has strictly prohibited any actions that directly criticize the country’s leader. Authorities have several times tried critics on charges related to crimes against the state or sedition.

The perpetrators are usually sent to political prison camps. Some of them were even executed.

In March 2018, for example, a colonel in the General Staff Department was publicly executed after criticizing Kim Jong-un’s regime through graffiti at the April 25 theater of the House of Culture in Pyongyang.
