Graduate Receives Awards for Pre-Scientific Work on Fuel Cells

Luca Erdkönig, a graduate of the Europagymnasium Leoben, dealt with the subject of fuel cells in his pre-scientific work. He has now received two awards for this.

LEOBEN. The end of his school career at the Europagymnasium Leoben could not have gone better for Luca Erdkönig: The graduate received two awards for his pre-scientific work (VWA) in chemistry. On the one hand, the Leobener received the VWA honorary prize of the Society of Austrian Chemists (GÖCH), on the other hand, his work “High-temperature fuel and electrolysis cells” was recognized with second place in the prize of the Styrian State Library, the “Prix Styria”.

A well-known jury with Helwig Brunner from the Ökoteam, Urania Chair Wolfgang Moser, Katharina Bergmann from the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute, LIFE Joanneum Research Director Franz Prettenthaler and Katharina Kocher-Lichem, Director of the State Library, selected the Prix Styria prizewinners met. For them, Luca Erdkönig’s work met all the criteria with flying colors: from the connection to Styria, the necessary topicality and the innovative factor to the literary and linguistic quality. In the Styrian State Library, the Leoben high school graduate was presented with the Prix Styria certificate and prize money of 300 euros by Sandra Holasek, member of the state parliament.

Interest in future-oriented technologies

Luca Erdkönig’s VWA, which he wrote with his teacher Sigrid Diethart, reflects his great scientific interest, especially for sustainable and future-oriented technologies. In the theoretical part, he dealt with the structure, properties and areas of application of various fuel cell types and in particular the hydrogen-operated high-temperature fuel cell and the hydrogen-producing high-temperature electrolytic cell.

In order to be able to test his theoretical explanations in practice, he completed an internship of several days with Werner Sitte and Andreas Egger at the Chair of Physical Chemistry at the Montanuniversität Leoben. In the course of this he was able to carry out measurements and deal with test conditions for optimal measurement results.
