Jakarta –
Minister of Religion (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said the new halal label issued by the Ministry of Religion’s Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) applies nationally. With this, gradually the halal label of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) is no longer valid.
“The Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) of the Ministry of Religion determines the halal label that applies nationally. The determination of the halal label is stated in the Decree of the Head of BPJPH Number 40 of 2022 concerning the Determination of the Halal Label,” said Minister of Religion Yaqut via his Instagram account, Sunday (13/3/2022).
“In the future, gradually the halal label issued by the MUI will be declared no longer valid. Halal certification, as stipulated in the law, is held by the government, no longer mass organizations,” he continued.
As is known, the determination of the halal label is stated in the Decree of the Head of BPJPH Number 40 of 2022 concerning the Determination of the Halal Label. The Decree was issued in Jakarta on Thursday (10/2), signed by the Head of BPJPH Muhammad Aqil Irham, and is effective as of March 1, 2022.
Aqil assessed the stipulation of halal labels to implement the provisions of Article 37 of Law Number 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Guarantee (JPH). The article contains the obligation of BPJPH to set a halal logo.
This determination is also part of the implementation of the mandate of Government Regulation (PP) Number 39 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of the JPH Sector.
“Implementing the mandate of legislation, especially Article 37 of Law Number 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Guarantee, BPJPH sets the halal label in the form of a logo as we officially listed in the Decree of the Head of BPJPH,” said Aqil in a written statement.
With the enactment of this regulation, there is a transfer of authority for the institution that issues halal certification from the Institute for the Study of Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics of the Indonesian Ulema Council (LPPOM MUI) to the Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH) under the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag). This design change is part of the transfer of authority for halal certification to BPJPH.
