Grabbing! Thousands of demonstrators storm Palace after Bangladesh PM flees

Thousands of exhibitors in Bangladesh storm the Prime Minister’s (PM) palace. Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh on Monday (5/8). It is reported that Hasina herself left the palace and fled from demonstrators demanding her resignation.

As reported AFPMonday (5/8/2024), local television broadcast Channel 24 they showed images of crowds rushing to the Bangladesh PM’s official residence in Dhaka, waving at journalists’ cameras as they celebrated Hasina’s escape.

Several local Bangladeshi television broadcasts showed the moment protesters stormed the palace where Hasina used to live, breaking into the interior and tearing down furniture, breaking glass door panels and bringing books and other items, including a live chicken.

“I was inside the Ganabhaban Palace. There were more than 1,500 people inside the palace. They broke furniture and glass,” said one Bangladeshi journalist named Yeasir Arafat when speaking to AFP.

Earlier, a source close to Hasina said AFP that the 76-year-old PM had left Dhaka, along with his sister, for “safer places”.

The source said Hasina “wanted to record her speech but did not get a chance to do so”.

The Prothom Alo newspaper report also said that Hasina had left the Bangladesh capital.

Demonstrations that began last month to protest job quotas for civil servants have escalated into the worst unrest of Hasina’s 15-year rule and turned into wider calls for the 76-year-old Prime Minister to resign.
