Grab Acquires Trans-cab: Strengthening Taxi and PHV Services in Singapore

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Grab acquired a 100 percent stake in Trans-cab which is the third largest taxi operator in Singapore and has a combined taxi and private charter (PHV) fleet of more than 2,500 vehicles.

The acquisition includes Transcab’s taxi and car rental businesses, maintenance shop and fuel pump operation.

General Manager, Trans-cab Jasmine Tan said, with this acquisition, he believes the technology in the Grab industry will help Trans-cab taxi drivers to drive more productively and safely.

“Consumer behavior has changed and we realized that for some time we needed to digitize our business and ensure that our taxi drivers can continue to be competitive. We believe this deal protects their future,” said Jasmine Tan in a Grab press release, Friday (21/7/2023).

This was also agreed upon by the Founder and Chairman of Trans-cab Teo Kiang Ang. He said, in collaboration with Grab, he could develop Trans Cab from a small fleet of 50 taxis two decades ago, which in the future it is hoped that it will become the second largest taxi company in Singapore.

“As we consider the future of our fleet and what is best for them, I feel confident that with Grab, we have found the right partner to deliver the Trans cab, which will do what is best for the driver and the business,” said Teo Kiang Ang.

Meanwhile, Managing Director, Grab Singapore Yee Wee Tang said, Grab plans to launch an enhanced Grab Driver application that will also be integrated with Mobile Display Units in Trans-cab taxis.

This application will enable Transcab taxi drivers to manage their income and receive orders from the Grab platform as well as Transcab’s existing call centers through one platform.

With Grab’s allocation technology, Transtaxi drivers will get bookings in a very efficient way, maximizing the productivity of drivers so they can generate more income.

“We see this as a strategic match with a win win win outcome for all. By increasing the number of drivers on our platform and helping them operate more efficiently, we are increasing how quickly and reliably we find a ride for our passengers, whenever they need it,” said Yee Wee Tang.

Grab also plans to explore incorporating software with vehicle hardware to further enhance the driving experience.

In addition, Grab plans to use technology to improve the taxi-sharing experience, which is currently done manually between taxi drivers as needed.

Trans drivers who join the Grab platform will also receive the benefits offered to all Grab driver-partners, including free coverage through Grab Personal Accident Insurance whenever they go online on the Grab platform, as well as access to GrabAcademy, where they can learn skills from a variety of free courses ranging from data analytics to supply chain management and digital marketing.
