GPs in the region are starting vaccinations with AstraZeneca

GPs in South Holland will start next week partly vaccinating with the AstraZeneca vaccine. Due to the limited availability of this vaccine, this has so far only happened in Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg and Gelderland.

In South Holland, this concerns the postcode areas 2957 to 4241, or in other words Goeree-Overflakkee, Hoeksche Waard, Voorne-Putten, Drechtsteden, Rotterdam, Schiedam, Vlaardingen and a large part of the Alblasserwaard. Lansingerland, for example, is partly outside this area.

Next come the 63- and 64-year-olds, as well as people with serious overweight and neurological disorders. GPs can give their orders this week and can start vaccinating from 31 March.

If more supplies become available, more groups will be vaccinated. The GGDs in our region (Rotterdam and South Holland-South) will resume vaccination with the AstaZeneca vaccine on Wednesday morning.

Stop

The vaccine was discredited after reports of a mysterious disease in vaccinees: a combination of thrombosis and a reduced number of platelets. More than twenty European countries subsequently stopped the vaccination with the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

It turned out to be a very rare immune system response, against which good treatment is possible. Many countries then decided to resume vaccination immediately. The Netherlands decided to wait a few days.
