Online learning or virtual classrooms may have helped children to continue learning in the testing times. However, continued exposure to screens and limited outdoor activities have caused some significant behavioral changes among them that are detrimental to their overall physical and emotional growth. Shedding light on the main challenges of continuous or extended online learning or staying indoors, Govind Narayan Singh, Secretary of Gopal Narayan Singh University shared his observations and solutions to protect children from their dangerous impact in an exclusive conversation with Financial Express Online. Excerpts:
Virtual classrooms have transformed children into introverts. Have you seen the change in the students you deal with?
The reason children become more reserved, restricted, or even introverted is that they have spent a lot of time at home in this new normal where gatherings and outdoor activities were restricted. Social interaction at this juncture has been reduced to the lowest levels and young minds have now found gadgets like their new friends. Technology at the moment is undoubtedly playing a very important role, but the attention towards games and other online activities has increased dramatically, which has limited activities such as reading books or outdoor activities and sports. The health of students is greatly affected by these factors. Furthermore, the lack of interaction is also affecting their mental health. Creativity may have increased, but the lack of a personal touch in communication is lacking.
Kids are more addicted and more comfortable with technology these days. So why are they shying away from using technology to make new friends?
Unfortunately, children have become comfortable with technology and are not realizing the harmful effects it has on their physical and mental health, as well as their social growth. They cannot make friends within peer groups due to restrictions. Young minds don’t understand the nuances of social media and how it hinders your social life. The growing friendliness to gadgets is even belittling the values of friendship and has very little meaning to them now. Today, there is a lack of education in values in homes, since families are fragmented. Technology addiction is leading children to loneliness that has increased during the pandemic. Also, Covid has developed a fear of psychosis in families and therefore most children are unable to make friends.
world and motivate them to make new friends and have regular contact with them?
To ensure that children do not lose contact with the world outdoors and continue to grow socially by making friends, it is important to determine how much time they spend on appliances or indoors. While online education has become part of the new normal, total online education should be discouraged and hybrid models should be adopted. Sports not only keep children in shape, but also teach them many life lessons that may be useful in the future. Therefore, sports habits should be fostered among young minds. Cove cases are declining and vaccination is improving, and in this scenario, small social gatherings can be organized and encouraged in a safe environment. Youth group mentoring should start and schools should also move forward with innovative forms of engagement such as subject groups. Students should also be aware of their social duties and may be asked to address their local or social problems or problems in the villages.
What problems can children face in their personality, daily activities, and general development if they get scared when talking to their peers?
Problems in the full development of the personality of children are a reason for a poor understanding of the environment around them. With this, the ability to think of them to solve problems can not see an increase. The mind does not grow with the body. In addition, the lower development of healthy relationships with the opposite sex is also a factor. Because of this, materialism is spawned in young minds and they don’t care about values like respecting and helping those in need. In addition, it dramatically reduces the empathy quotient that is critical to growing as a good and responsible citizen.
How can the university and teachers help students combat this change?
The only way is to get them out of their homes so that they can grow as social beings and become aware of their responsibilities and importance in society. They should be encouraged to play more games and participate in physical and team-building activities. They should be made aware of problems in society and encouraged to rehearse their social duties. In addition, their positive effort to achieve visible change in society and the creation of community networks should also be encouraged.
