Governors Island will open to visitors year-round starting Monday.
Beginning November 1, Governors Island will be open from 7 am to 6:15 pm, seven days a week, throughout the year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in September.
“We have a gem in New York City Harbor. We have a magical place that all New Yorkers should experience. It will be a big part of our future: Governors Island,” de Blasio said. “But Governors Island for a long time was not accessible to New Yorkers, and then since it has become accessible, it is not for the whole year, it is only for certain times of the year. We are going to change that. Starting this fall we are going to open Governors Island throughout the year. “
Additionally, to accommodate the new schedule, the Mayor also announced that the ferry service to Governors Island will be expanded. According to de Blasio, once the city’s new Coney Island Line ferry launches, it will stop on Governors Island throughout the year.
“It’s an amazing place to go and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city,” de Blasio said, adding that the time change comes at a time when the city is working on a new climate center on the island.
The Climate Solutions Center that the city is creating on Governors Island “will literally become the global capital to combat climate change” with the interest of numerous universities and other partners who want to join the project, de Blasio said.
“Governors Island, where modern New York City began, will be where we help save the city and every city in the world by finding solutions to [combatir] climate change, “he said.
