Governors Kathy Hochul and Phil Murphy announced Friday that flags will fly at half-staff in both New York and New Jersey on Monday, September 11, in remembrance of the lives lost that day 22 years ago.
“22 years ago, our nation was forever changed by a cowardly act of terror that took the lives of thousands of innocent Americans,” said Governor Hochul. “New Yorkers are united in our grief for those we lost and in our gratitude to the first responders and other heroes of that day. We will never forget it.”
Hochul also announced that 15 state monuments and bridges will be illuminated blue in recognition of the 22nd anniversary. State landmarks and bridges that will be illuminated include:
One World Trade Center
Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge
Kosciuszko Bridge
The H. Carl McCall SUNY Building
State Education Building
Alfred E. Smith State Office Building
Empire State Plaza
State Fairgrounds – Main Gate & Expo Center
Niagara Falls
The “Franklin D. Roosevelt” Mid-Hudson Bridge
Albany International Airport Gateway
The Lake Placid Olympic Center
MTA Long Island Rail Road – East End Gateway at Penn Station
Fairport Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal
Moynihan Train Hall
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
Of the nearly 3,000 innocent people who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks, nearly 700 were New Jersey residents, according to Governor Murphy’s office.
“Twenty-two years later, September 11, 2001, continues to be remembered and mourned across our nation as we reflect on this anniversary with the patriotism and compassion that define us as Americans,” Governor Murphy said. “We will never forget the lives that were taken from us and we will continue to honor their memory by defending the democracy that our enemies sought to destroy on that tragic day. “We remain grateful to our first responders, law enforcement, military and intelligence officers for their extraordinary sacrifices to protect our country as we observe 9/11 with complete solemnity, honoring the victims of the attacks and their loved ones.”
