The Governor of the Capital is there for a reason
BBB leader Caroline van der Plas suggested this week an emergency ordinance for the Dam during National Remembrance Day. That was very Lientje* because that measure already came into effect on May 4 due to the presence of the monarch, queen, cabinet members, the military top and last but not least the thousands of citizens who literally want to take a moment to remember the hundreds of thousands of fallen and murdered Dutch people. civilians and soldiers. Nevertheless, there are legitimate concerns about the upcoming national two minutes of silence. Since the October 7 pogrom in Israel, the anti-Semitic breeze that has always been circulating has grown into a storm. PvdAGroenLinks politicians (and civil servants), Extinction Rebellion and other activists have abandoned all trepidation; Jews are unsafe on the street, in the theater and in Action. The Fourth of May is obviously a target for such types. But more important than the emergency ordinance is the person who enforces it. Perhaps it would be an idea not to have Mayor Femke Halsema do that this time.
The tumultuous opening of the National Holocaust Museum at the beginning of this month was not a national commemoration, but given the subject it was just as charged and concerned the entire country. The Amsterdam city council clearly made mistakes in its implementation. Criticism from the cabinet was rightly heard from, among others, Minister of Justice Dilan Yesilgöz and her second husband Eric van der Burg (to which Halsema responded in her characteristic furious manner: it is never her fault, always the other person’s fault). The fact is that this BM does not have a happy hand in enforcement, when the corona pandemic gained steam in 2020, Halsema allowed an anti-racism demonstration on Dam Square with 15,000 attendees to get out of hand, an affair that also ended in a confrontation with the cabinet.
In short, there are some questions to be raised about Halsema’s performance in the field of maintaining public order. The people of Amsterdam are now happy with her, the city council recently granted Halsema a second term and that is Wokum’s right. But it is sometimes forgotten that Amsterdam is also the capital of our country, and in that respect 020 represents all Dutch people. That is why the two minutes of silence in front of the palace are included nationale commemoration. It is unfortunate that the final responsibility lies with the local and controversial Halsema. With the issue of the hidden prohibited firearm in the official residence in mind, she certainly cannot be called the Citizen Mother of the Fatherland, can she? Isn’t there someone irreproachable who can independently, with authority and the required qualities, manage the Fourth of May? Yes, there is, in the person of the man in the photo above.
Meet Major General Jean-Paul Duckers. At the end of 2022, he was appointed Deputy Commander of the Army (PCLAS), which includes an additional position: Governor of the Capital. This position is a remnant from earlier royal times and today has a mainly ceremonial role. The Governor is responsible for the military display during state visits and ceremonies in Amsterdam (for example, The Hague still has a Governor of the Residence in the person of Commander Royal Military Police Lieutenant General Annelore Roelofs. She leads the procession on horseback on Budget Day). Duckers is therefore not Prince Carnival, but as PCLAS one of the highest-ranking soldiers in the country, of impeccable behavior and therefore very capable of steering the National Remembrance Day in the right direction.
Then Halsema can be the mayor of Clown Town for the rest of the year.
*At the beginning of this week she was on fire about the anti-Semitic pro-Pallie action against Lenny Kuhr. Take a look.
