GRESIK (Lenteratoday)- The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, moved quickly in handling cases of mouth and nail disease (FMD) in livestock that occurred in East Java. Khofifah went down and directly supervised the intensive treatment process for livestock in Gresik Regency, which was one of four districts in East Java where FMD cases were found.
His party reviewed the treatment of H. Bakri’s Cattle Animals in Wates Hamlet, Kedungpring Village, Kec. Balongpanggang, Saturday (7/5/2022). At the location of H Bakri’s livestock treatment, Khofifah immediately put on PPE and watched step by step the treatment of farm animals who were given vitamins or antibiotic drugs by injection. Later, injections and vitamins will be given every three days.
There were clinical signs of animal FMD disease there. These include high fever (39-41 degrees Celsius), excessive mucus coming out of the mouth and foaming, Injuries such as thrush in the mouth and tongue, refusing to eat, limping legs, Injuries to the feet and ending with loose nails, difficulty standing, shaking, rapid breathing, milk production drops dramatically and becomes thin.
“Today we are conducting a direct review for the treatment of livestock, which we both do in the context of handling FMD in livestock,” he said.
As previously reported, PMK itself has been found in four districts in East Java Province. This infectious disease has attacked around 1,247 cattle in Gresik, Lamongan, Sidoarjo, and Mojokerto regencies.
Governor Khofifah said that the current outbreak of FMD is an acute infectious animal disease that attacks livestock such as cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep, horses and pigs with a transmission rate of 90-100%. “However, what we need to know together is that this disease is not transmitted to humans, but only to other animals,” he explained.
Call for Quarantine per District
Khofifah appealed to owners and breeders to isolate and quarantine all infected and healthy livestock to provide protection so that the transmission of this epidemic can be controlled starting from the sub-districts.
According to him, quarantine can be carried out starting from sub-districts or villages that have livestock cages that are close together. The reason is that the transmission of this PMK virus can occur through the air or Airborne, which is similar to Covid-19 so that anticipatory steps can be easier not to spread later.
It is hoped that sub-districts that are not confirmed positive for PMK will also carry out quarantine and isolation efforts first. There should be no interaction between positively conformed livestock and healthy livestock.
“Through quarantine and isolation like this, we can estimate the distance or radius from the air that can carry this virus. So the transmission can be controlled,” he explained.
“I ask that livestock such as cows that are affected by the FMD outbreak or which have not been immediately protected by not being taken out of the cage first. If the spread is through air transmission, then the animals inside should not come out and the animals from outside should not enter. This prevention pattern is similar to the handling of Covid-19,” he said.
Governor Khofifah said that his party today, Saturday (7/5/2022) proposed to the Minister of Agriculture regarding the determination of the status of the PMK Outbreak in 4 districts that were tested positive, to limit livestock traffic to and from the outbreak area.
He emphasized that for the time being the animal markets in these four areas will be temporarily closed to minimize the spread of this FMD virus. The Animal Market is temporarily closed to reduce the transmission of the spread between those who are confirmed positive and negative.
“For the time being, we will also temporarily close the Animal Market in the outbreak area, depopulate (destroy) livestock that are confirmed positive for FMD,” he added.
With the stipulation of an outbreak that occurs, later breeders will be given vaccinations or medicines from the government which can now be obtained if imported, because the last Pusvetma made the PMK vaccine in 1986.
For information, clinical signs of FMD in livestock include, high fever (39-41 degrees Celsius), excessive mucus coming out of the mouth and foaming, Injuries such as thrush in the oral cavity and tongue, refusal to eat, limping legs, Wounds on the mouth. feet and ends loose nails, difficulty standing, shaking, rapid breathing, milk production dropped dramatically and became thin.
At the end of her interview with the media crew covering her, Khofifah emphasized that meat from animals that have been confirmed by FMD can still be consumed. However, his party wants people to get fresh meat from healthy cows or livestock.
“If the meat is harmless and safe for consumption by proper cooking, we want people to get healthy meat. Moreover, we will soon enter Eid al-Adha and we will build this atmosphere as calmly as possible, especially for our farmers,” he concluded.
