THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leaders have spoken out against Governor Arif Mohammad Khan for denying permission to a special assembly session to be convened on March 23 to pass a resolution against the central government’s new agrarian laws. Opposition leaders Ramesh Chennithala and VD Satheesan MLA criticized the governor’s action, while BJP leaders K Surendran, V Muraleedharan and O Rajagopal came out in support of the governor.
Ramesh Chennithala’s response was that it was unfortunate that the governor did not give permission. He said the governor’s move to deny permission to the legislature on technical grounds that it was not of urgent importance was anti-democratic. VD Satheesan MLA also opined that the action of the governor was wrong. He demanded that the central government recall the governor.
Welcoming the governor’s move, BJP state president K Surendran said the move by the ruling-opposition alliance to insult democracy was unconstitutional. Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the governor’s action was correct and that it was a violation of federal principles for the ruling party to target a special conference.
