Governor Laura Kelly Calls Tim Walz ‘Epitome of Midwestern Dad’ as Kamala Harris’ Running Mate Ahead of 2024 Election

Laura Kelly Highlights Tim Walz as Key Asset for VP Candidate Kamala Harris

Washington — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, who serves as chair of the Democratic Governors Association, praised Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, describing him as “the epitome of the Midwestern dad.” During an appearance on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Kelly emphasized Walz’s appeal as an essential part of Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign as they approach the elections in November.

Tim Walz’s Down-to-Earth Appeal

Governor Kelly stated, “You could put him at any state fair, on any Main Street, and certainly in any Friday night football game in rural Kansas, and he would fit right in.” Walz, who has served as Minnesota’s governor for two terms, was chosen last week by Harris to be her running mate ahead of their campaign trail across seven battleground states.

A Respected Political Background

At 60 years old, Tim Walz brings a wealth of experience to the ticket as a former high school social studies teacher, coach, congressman, and military veteran. His selection has garnered widespread support within the Democratic Party, renewing enthusiasm in light of President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election.

Understanding Rural America

Addressing concerns over whether Walz’s strength in connecting with rural voters has been exaggerated, Kelly strongly advocated for his ability to represent and understand rural issues. She noted, “While Minnesota is a blue state, he represented in Congress for 12 years a very red section of Minnesota.” According to Kelly, Walz’s genuine grasp of rural communities is a significant advantage for the Harris-Walz campaign.

Connecting with Rural Kansans

Governor Kelly, who has been successfully elected twice in a historically red state, articulated a strategy for the Democratic Party to re-engage with rural voters in America. She emphasized the necessity of active listening and genuine engagement with constituents. “We need to remember that here in Kansas, we are Kansans,” she stated, highlighting that fostering trust and understanding with voters is essential for Democratic candidates.
