Governor Kathy Hochul Signs Angelic Law to Protect New Yorkers from Reckless and Unlicensed Drivers

The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, signed this week the Angelic Law to try to protect the citizens of the state from reckless and unlicensed drivers.

The legislation comes from Angelica Nappi, 14, from Long Island, who was hit and killed in 2008 by an unlicensed driver with five previous suspensionsaccording to a statement from Hochul’s office.

The statute was signed by the governor at the Garden City headquarters of the Department of Motor Vehicles, in the company of the family of the deceased.

The governor of New York hopes Angelic Law will keep people behind the wheel with prior suspensions off the streets by attaching a felony charge to drivers who operate automobiles without a valid license.

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, Mark Schroeder, stated that lThe mission of the DMV and the committee is “to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.”

Nappi’s mother, Dawn Riendeau, explained that Angelic Law is part of her fight for safer roads.

“I know Angelica is proud,” Riendeau said.
