Governor Hochul Urges President Biden for Action on Increasing Arrival of Asylum Seekers in New York State

NEW YORK.- Faced with the increasing arrival of asylum seekers in New York State, Governor Kathy Hochul urged President Joe Biden to take executive action and provide additional resources at the federal level to address this unprecedented situation.

The governor’s petition covers expedited work authorizations for asylum seekers, financial assistance for the city and state, use of federal land and facilities, and reimbursement for the nearly 2,000 members of the New York National Guard.

In an official letter to the White House, Governor Hochul detailed a series of pending requests, all designed to address the logistical and humanitarian challenges stemming from the massive influx of migrants and asylum seekers.

“For more than a year, we have requested federal assistance and support for New York as we deal with the unprecedented flow of asylum seekers coming to our state,” Hochul said in an official statement. “New York cannot continue to deal with this situation alone. It is time for President Biden to act and provide New York with the help it needs to deal with this current crisis.”

Hochul proposes labor incorporation of migrants

The governor also introduced a program intended to significantly expand the state’s ability to facilitate the employment of asylum seekers.

He ordered the New York State Department of Labor (DOL) to connect asylum seekers with job opportunities throughout the state so they can start working immediately after receiving federal work authorization.

Through this program, DOL professionals will work with applicants to assess their skills, employment history, education, and career interests, facilitating their connection with employers in different regions of the state.

Likewise, the Department of Labor launched a portal that allows companies to express their willingness to welcome newly authorized people into their work teams.

These actions represent the latest effort by Governor Hochul to address the constant flow of asylum seekers and migrants arriving in New York.

Earlier this week, Hochul announced a $20 million investment to speed up the filing process for more than 30,000 asylum seekers.

This investment is in addition to the $1.5 billion the state has already committed to support New York City, covering areas such as health care, housing, National Guard personnel, legal services and voluntary relocation programs.

Temporary shelters open for asylum seekers

In her effort to address the humanitarian crisis, the Governor has also coordinated the opening of temporary shelters on state-owned properties to house more than 2,000 asylum seekers each day.

Governor Hochul expressed her concerns and requests to President Biden in a letter, stressing the importance of collaboration between the federal government, the state, and the city in addressing the humanitarian crisis.

Among the key aspects of the letter are the request for significant financial assistance to support efforts to manage the influx of migrants, as well as the need to facilitate work authorizations for asylum seekers.
