NEW YORK — Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday deployed an additional 150 members of the New York National Guard to support the ongoing response to the asylum seeker and migrant crisis.
With this measure, the State will be able to assign 250 members of the National Guard personnel the full-time responsibilities of case management professionals. This deployment, along with the state’s $50 million investment in case management so far, will help asylum seekers and migrants present the proper documentation to obtain legal work status and leave taxpayer-funded shelters. That is, they will be able to help people with their process to request TPS.
“It is critical that we help obtain work authorization for asylum seekers and migrants in New York,” said Governor Hochul. “We need to make sure that people can complete the necessary procedures to settle here and be able to work and start making their American dream a reality. “Our National Guard members play a very important role in assisting in the process and we are grateful for their service.”
Governor Hochul announced the deployment of 150 additional New York National Guard troops and assets to asylum seeker sites in New York City. This deployment is in addition to the 1,900 National Guard troops currently providing logistical and operational support to asylum seekers across the state. New York National Guard personnel currently staff 51 hotels and two New York City Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers.
In addition to the New York National Guard, Governor Hochul directed other state resources to help Venezuelans and other asylum seekers and migrants present the appropriate documentation to quickly receive legal work status. Working in partnership with federal and city officials, New York is in the midst of a “Month of Action” where more than 50 federal Department of Homeland Security personnel are in New York working to process work authorization paperwork. This is in addition to an additional $20 million allocated to local nonprofits, $20 million allocated to assist New York City with a surge in cases through NYC Health + Hospitals, as well as $10 million for migrant legal services allocated in the FY24 Budget.
The governor’s announcements come after last Wednesday earlier this month, White House officials announced that certain people from Venezuela, who have continuously resided in the United States since or before July 31, 2023, meet the requirements for apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
