Governor allocates funds for arts education – NotiCel – The truth as it is – Puerto Rico News – NOTICEL

The School of Plastic Arts, the Conservatory of Music and the Corporation of the Musical Arts will benefit.

Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced signed Law 161-2020 that assigns a percentage of the collections obtained from the taxes imposed on cigarettes and tobacco products to the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico, to the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and the Corporation for Musical Arts.

“Preserving cultural heritage and that it lasts for generations to come is important for the arts and education of a country. As the measure states, it is art education is important to society. These three government institutions are pillars in the promotion and preservation of our arts and the education of our future artists, promoting culture in and outside of Puerto Rico, ”said the governor.

Upon approval of this law, a statutory budget allocation similar to that assigned to the University of Puerto Rico is established. This ensures an automatic budget allocation to these specialized art and music entities.

“The community of the Conservatory of Music genuinely thanks the honorable Governor Vázquez Garced and the Legislative Assembly for the promptness and probity with which they acted in order to strengthen the sustainability and permanence of our public and specialized university, even more so in times of great challenges. economical. We have no doubt that the signing of Law 161 not only constitutes a decisive step in the ongoing task of ensuring the educational and cultural mission of one of the most prominent music conservatories in Latin America, but also that this legislation is a reliable recognition and effective to the prominence and value that music and the arts in general have in the formation of all Puerto Ricans ”, highlighted the rector of the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, Pedro Segarra Sisamone.

Meanwhile, Ileana Muñoz Landrón, rector of the School of Plastic Arts and Design, said: “The School thanks Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced for her support and management with this amendment to the law. With this amendment, three bastions of culture can be preserved on our island. Education, art and music should always be seen as a priority ”.

For his part, the executive director of the Corporación de las Artes Musicales, Carlos Ruiz Cortés, said: “This is excellent news to close the year. I thank the governor for the approval of this project, which means an important and necessary direct capital inflow to the main cultural institutions of Puerto Rico, helping to make their operation possible and allowing the development of arts and culture, as well as their research. , conservation, promotion and dissemination ”.
