With the news that the government is pursuing a plan to significantly increase the number of students admitted to domestic medical schools starting from the 2025 entrance exam, medical groups are putting forward an all-out response plan, and attention is being paid to future results.

Regarding the recent series of reports about the government expanding the number of medical school students, the Korean Medical Association’s representative committee said, “We agreed that if the reports turn out to be true, the Korean Medical Association must respond with all its might with all available means.”

The Medical Association Representative Council said in a statement, “Reports that regard the expansion of the medical school quota as a fait accompli are causing shock and confusion in the medical community,” and added, “They omitted the revision of laws and financial investment to minimize the side effects of expanding the number of doctors, and simply tried to increase the number of medical school quota.” “Political ideas will ruin medical care and threaten people’s health,” he argued.

The National Council of Metropolitan City and Provincial Medical Associations also issued a statement on the same day and announced that it would block the increase in the number of medical school students, and medical groups argue that the expansion of the number of students in medical schools should be handled by the medical issue consultative body established with the government.

Despite opposition from the medical community, the government is known to be considering delaying the announcement until after this week, without hesitating from its policy to expand the number of medical school students.

While the government maintains its policy of significantly expanding the number of medical school students, it is considering not disclosing details such as the specific scope and schedule for the expansion of the number of students later this week, as originally planned.

Even within the government, there is a clear justification for increasing the number of medical school seats and public opinion is favorable, but it is reported that there is an argument that further consultation with the medical community is needed regarding details such as method and targets.

Previously, it was reported that the Yoon administration would drastically expand the medical school quota, which has been limited to 3,058 since 2006, by more than 1,000, and is also considering a plan to increase the number to 3,000 within this administration.
