The government must look for large locations where at least 3,000 homes can be built per site after 2030. In total, about a million homes should be added. The area between Groningen and Assen, the Eindhoven region, South Limburg and the Stedendriehoek Apeldoorn, Deventer, Zutphen are examined, among other things.
In a letter to the House of Representatives, outgoing Minister De Jonge writes that another 300,000 homes can probably be built before 2030 at the seventeen large locations in the most urbanized areas in the Netherlands, which the cabinet had already envisioned. But he warns that this isn’t enough.
De Jonge writes that the total ‘housing task’ in the period before 2030 is to build 981,000 homes. And he expects that approximately the same number will probably have to be added in the next ten years.
‘Grip on migration’
He believes it is necessary to start looking for good locations now and will discuss this in more detail in his Spatial Policy Document, which will be published next year.
The minister writes that there is now a shortage of 400,000 homes. According to Statistics Netherlands, the number of inhabitants of the Netherlands may grow from 17.8 million now to 19.6 or even 20.6 million in 2050. If migration is not controlled, according to De Jonge, it could even reach 22 million.
