Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Choi Sang-mok said, “We will supply up to 260,000 tons of seasonal products and invest 84 billion won in discount support to manage prices lower than the previous year.”
First, the government decided to provide a 30% discount on the prices of domestic agricultural, livestock and marine products sold at supermarkets, traditional markets, and online malls from the 18th to the 8th of next month. It is sold at a discounted price at supermarkets, etc., and the government makes up for the discount with taxes. Participating retailers also offer discounts of 10 to 30 percent, so consumers can receive discounts of up to 60 percent.
Discounts apply to 16 Lunar New Year products, including apples, pears, eggs, beef, pork, chicken, pollack, and seaweed. In addition, about 10 agricultural and livestock products whose prices have recently risen sharply will be added. This item changes every week depending on price increases. Imported fruits such as oranges and bananas are discounted by up to 50% through discount promotions at large supermarkets such as Homeplus.
If you use a traditional market, you can receive additional discounts. First of all, you can buy a Zero Pay gift certificate that allows you to buy agricultural, livestock and marine products at a discounted price at traditional markets. Gift certificates for agricultural and livestock products can be purchased at a 30% discount up to 20,000 won, and marine products can be purchased at a 20% discount up to 40,000 won.
Traditional market card billing discounts and Onnuri gift certificate refund discounts will also continue. From the 25th of this month to the 2nd of next month, if you use your NH Nonghyup card at a traditional market Nonghal gift certificate affiliated store, you will automatically receive a discount of up to 20,000 won. For six days from the 3rd of next month, you can receive up to 20,000 won back as an Onnuri gift certificate when purchasing agricultural and livestock products at traditional markets. The number of traditional markets participating in the refund event also doubles compared to last year’s Lunar New Year.
The purchase limit per person for Onnuri gift certificates that can be used at traditional markets, etc. will also be increased by 500,000 won per month from the 20th. In the case of a rechargeable card type, you can purchase up to 2 million won per month. The total amount of Onnuri gift certificates issued will also increase by 1 trillion won to 5 trillion won this year.
Measures to support accommodation fees to promote local tourism are also included. Starting from the 7th of next month, 200,000 coupons for lodging in non-metropolitan areas will be sequentially distributed. This is a coupon that gives you a 30,000 won discount if you spend more than 50,000 won.
However, some are concerned that the government’s measures to stimulate consumption by releasing taxes may push up prices. An official from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance said, “Prices of apples and pears remain high due to a lack of production,” and added, “We will also work to stabilize supply and demand to increase supply to the average level.”
